Brain Mapping

Optical Technique for Functional Imaging at the Cortex

An investigation was performed for clinical evaluation of a method allowing a localization of functional areas using Spectral Imagng. It is based on the oxygen consumption during brain activity changing the oxygen saturation of blood and other parameters leading to minor local changes of optical properties of the cortex.

Fig. 1: Cortex with marked areas of changes of the optical properties as a result of tongue movements. Gray and white marked areas have different sign of changes. The changes are the same as found by electro stimulation, for which speech arrest was induced in area 1 and 2. The signals at area 3 are an artefact at the edge of the surgery area.
